Iconography

Description

In the center, in a pyramid form, two shields of the Canton of Zurich are surmounted by that of the Holy Roman Empire with its Imperial Crown. They are flanked by rampant lions, one holding and orb and the other a sword. They stand against an arcade of gold columns against blue pilasters with green capitals, supporting a red lintel. A curved vault is overhead. At the far end is a lunette opening showing a festooned vase with fruits and flowers. Below the arms is a cartouche with a wide red border that displays the date. To either side are architectural moldings with swags and fruit. Surrounding the panel on all four sides are the multi-colored coasts of arms of Zurich’s thirty-five associated localities.

State of Conservation and Restorations

The panel is substantially intact with good shown a few replacements (the ground between the two shields in the Zurich pyramid and the top of the column on the left as well as the lion’s paw touching the crown on the left). It is possible that the shields of Pfyn, Hegi, and Laufen on the upper left have been replaced too.

Technique

The panel is composed of uncolored glass, blue, green and light orange pot metal glass and with flashed and abraded red. Vitreous paint, silver stain, and red, blue and green enamel defines the imagery.

History

Research

Several examples show the evolution of the panel of the Canton of Zurich over time. Most are in a circular shape. A panel of about 1535 displays twenty-seven dependent cities and counties (Cham, Private Collection: Bergmann, 2004, pp. 179–80, no. 4). See similar display in Arms of Zurich, dated about 1535 in the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Kunstgewerbemuseum (no. 167; Pfeiffer, 2010, vol. 1, p. 295, fig. 333). There appears to be little consistency in the juxtaposition of the cities; they appear in varying order in the arms… More
