Iconography

Description

The canon kneels, silhouetted against a rich blue damascene background, looking left and holding an open book. He is richly dressed; a voluminous white alb over a murrey tunic that buttons at the neck and a fur almuce with a cowl is over his shoulder. A gold-colored placard above his head gives the name of the foundation, here interpreted as the Vinzenzenstift of Bern. On his right is a massive column hung with festoons and embellished with acanthus leaves at the base. In front of the column, and behind the canon’s cloak are two sea gods. The male carries a torse-shell shield and a female with wildly flying hair sits behind and holds onto his chest.

Technique / State

State of Conservation and Restorations

The panel appears almost fully intact, with remarkably well-preserved paint surface.
In 2003, segments of the supporting lead system were consolidated to provide a more stable support. At the lower left edge there are two stopgaps.

Technique

The panel is essentially restricted to uncolored glass, a deep blue pot metal background, and a yellow pot metal inscription. A deep murrey appears in the canon’s hat and collar and also on the base of the column. Silver stain is used to add accents to hair, outline the book cover, enhance the architecture, and create the deep green tassels hanging from the inscription cartouche.

History

Research

The panel was at the Frankfurt am Main auction of Hugo Helbing in 1932 (Helbing, 1932, nr. 208) identified as Freiburg or Basel, about 1520. In 1933, it was offered to the Historic Museum of Berne, by A. Klein, Frankfurt but is then not documented until its appearance in the Sam Fogg catalogue of 2002. In the catalogue, the panel was attributed to a site identified as the Premonstratensian Abbey of Rot an der Rot, Berkheim (Michael, 2002, pp. 7, 94–99, 122, no. 42). The attribution was continued by Raguin (Raguin, 2024, vol… More
