Beschreibung

This pencil and watercolour drawing by the British architect James William Wild (1814–1892) shows part of an interior in Cairo with several stucco and glass windows. Windows with different motifs can be seen, such as stylized vases of flowers, cypress trees, flowers, peacocks, Arabic calligraphy, and a large variety of abstract geometric forms.

Forschung

Wild added a pencil note in the lower central part of this drawing indicating that the interior shown depicts part of the Cairene house in which the Victorian painter John Frederick Lewis (1804–1876) lived during his sojourn in Egypt for almost ten years (Weeks, 2014, pp. 40–43). Wild lived in Cairo at the same time as Lewis, between 1844 and 1847, and had access to Lewis’s traditional Cairene house (Thomas, 2013, p. 48). In their motifs and their arrangement, the windows depicted by Wild in this watercolour closely correspond to the windows in an interior painted in watercolour by Lewis (IG_119).
