Biographical Data

Hungarian architect, conservator, museum director, and architectural historian, active in Egypt. In 1887, he inherited the post of Julius Franz on his retirement from the Comité de Conservation des Monuments de l’Art Arabe. From 1890, he held the post of chief architect of the Comité, which had been created expressly for him. In 1892, the Comité put Herz in charge of the museum of Arab Art in Cairo, and in 1901 he was appointed its director. Herz had a deep knowledge of stucco and glass windows and analysed their technique in more detail than ever before.
