Information About the Studio

Maison Bonfils was a French photography studio in Beirut. The couple Félix Bonfils (1831–1885) and Marie-Lydie Cabanis (1837–1918) opened the studio in 1867. In the following 30 years, the studio became one of the most successful photographic businesses in the world. It provided photographs of most of the important sights in the Middle East.
In 1878, Félix Bonfils had returned to France and the studio was run by his wife and their son Adrien (1861–1929). After his death in 1885, they continued the business. Various assistants were employed, among them Abraham Guiragossian (1872–1955), who took over the Maison Bonfils in 1907 (or 1909) and continued to operate until 1838 (Jacobson, 2007, pp. 216–217; Arnaudiès, 2022, p. 86).
