The private "Orientalisches Museum" was founded in 1874 with the aim of promoting trade relations between the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the countries of the Balkans and Asia Minor. In 1887, the Oriental Museum was transformed into the "Handelsmuseum" (Raché, pp. 31-34).
