History

Research

Between 1818 and 1827, Pascal Coste documented the buildings in Cairo extensively, among them many private houses. The details shown here are part of a mashrabiyya represented in a second drawing (MS1311_f39a, see Linked objects and images). Letters indicate the placement of the architectonical details. In difference to other of his drawings which relate directly to the plates published in 1837 in Architecture arabe ou Monuments du Kaire, mesurés et dessinés, de 1818 à 1826, this mashrabiyya is not represented in the book. Coste gives no information about it.
A window preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (93.26.3, IG_181) shows a similar motif, with a round centrical motif and stems with flowers arising from it.
