Iconography

Description

This lithograph, made by Émile Prisse d’Avennes (1807–1879), shows a rectangular stucco and glass window with the motif of a stylized cypress tree entwined by a yellow tendril with red blossoms, within an arch. The holes drilled in the stucco are indicated with many small dots. The arched frame consists of geometric forms made of pieces of red and green glass. Stylized blossoms can be seen in the four corners of the rectangular frame. The stucco and glass window is encased in a wooden frame with interlace ornament. Prisse d’Avennes drew the entire window in a fine pencil drawing, but concentrated mainly on the right-hand side of the symmetrical window when colouring it. There is an annotation above which says “Echelle”.

Lithograph, watercolour on wove paper. Coloured proof for L’art arabe d’après les monuments du Kaire depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin du XVIIIe, 1869–1877.

History

Research

This lithograph, preserved in émile Prisse d’Avennes’s album Art Arabe. Dessins: Arabesques, 5 held at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, was a coloured proof for the French archaeologist’s book L’Art arabe d’après les monuments du Kaire depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin du XVIIIe, published in 1877 (vol. 3, pl. CXLIV, IG_42). Prisse d’Avennes (1869–77, p. vol. 1, p. 278) states that the stucco and glass window illustrated comes from the Sayyida Zaynab Mosque in Cairo.
A second proof for the same plate (IG_468) which apart from the slightly more matt colours is identical, shows Prisse’s careful preparation of the plates.
