Description

This black and white illustration shows a perspective view of a corner of the room with a divan. The lower zone of the wall is decorated with ceramic tiles and a wooden lattice, while two stucco and glass windows are integrated into the upper zone of the wall. The two windows shown in the illustration are decorated with different motifs: that on the left side features a stylized vase of flowers, while that the right represents a stylized cypress tree.

Research

This wood engraving portrays the interior of the studio of the British painter Frank Dillon (1832–1908) in Kensington (11 Durham Villas, Camden Hill), which according to the title (“Frank Dillon’s in arabischem Stil eingerichtetes Atelier”) was furnished in ‘Arab style’ (Ebers, 1880, p. 96). It was published in the second volume of Georg Ebers’s two-volume Aegypten in Bild und Wort (Stuttgart and Leipzig: Hallberger 1880, p. 96).
The original drawing was made by August Ramsthal (life dates unknown), who made many illustrations for Ebers (1880, p. 419).
