Biografische Daten

Swiss physician and glass-painter. Stantz was Born in Bern on 18 September 1801, the son of Samuel Karl Stantz and Rosina Katharina Blauner. In 1831, he married Antonia von Schauenburg from Gaisbach (Baden, Germany) and in 1825 was awarded a doctorate in medicine by the University of Göttingen.
From around 1834, Stantz studied glass-making and glass-painting at a glass-works in the Black Forest and in Munich. He then worked as a glass-painter in Constance. In 1848, Stantz moved to Bern, where he became a member of the Gesellschaft zu Kaufleuten and was appointed Bürgerrat (citizen councillor) in 1850 and President of the Library Commission in 1856.
Until his death, Stantz was a prolific glass-painter and designer of stained glass. Among other things, he created the stained glass for the Gesellschaftshaus zu Pfistern; the cantonal coats of arms for the present Bundeshaus West; and stained glass for Bern Minster, as well as Oberhofen Castle and Hünegg Castle on Lake Thun. He was also active as a restorer, heraldist, and author.
